At United Way of Southwest Virginia, we are committed to standing with our communities through every stage of a disaster before, during, and after it occurs. Through our United Recovery Force, we take a proactive and coordinated approach to strengthening regional resilience by preparing individuals and families ahead of emergencies, responding swiftly when crises arise, and supporting long-term recovery efforts that help communities rebuild stronger than before. By working hand-in-hand with local partners, volunteers, and residents, we are dedicated to ensuring Southwest Virginia is not only ready to face disasters, but equipped to recover and thrive in their aftermath.

Emergency Preparedness

The United Way of Southwest Virginia’s United Recovery Force Disaster Division is deeply committed to strengthening our region’s resilience through proactive emergency preparedness efforts. By prioritizing community education, the division equips individuals and families with the knowledge and tools needed to confidently navigate disasters before they occur. Through strong collaboration with local agencies, partners, and volunteers, we work to build a coordinated network of support that can respond effectively in times of crisis. In addition, the delivery of preparedness supplies directly into our communities ensures that residents have access to essential resources when they need them most. Together, these efforts reflect our unwavering commitment to fostering a safer, more prepared, and more resilient Southwest Virginia.

Rapid Disaster Response

Immediate Response

Whether it is a manmade or natural disaster, we get called to the scene to help assess the immediate needs. This can range from operating a donations center to collect, organize, and distribute goods, to activating volunteers who can assist with a wide range of immediate tasks.

Southwest Virginia Regional Rapid Disaster Response Fund

United Way of Southwest Virginia has developed the Southwest Virginia Regional Disaster Response Fund to serve as a financial resource to provide immediate assistance in the aftermath of natural or humanitarian disasters. The primary purpose of these funds is to ensure that resources are available at the onset of disaster, allowing United Way to mobilize quickly and effectively for our region.

Please note, this fund may be subject to an administrative fee to ensure the fund is properly managed.

Long Term Recovery

Long-Term Recovery

When hit with disaster, United Way of Southwest Virginia steps up and actively seeks funding to assist citizens in our region. Our team goes to work sourcing donations and grants to build a budget for your recovery. We then collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies, plus long-term recovery groups to activate recovery efforts. Through our Contractor Program we directly serve our citizens with home repairs and case management. We stay with you until your recovery is complete.
