United Way of Southwest Virginia Raises Over $2 Million for Hurricane Helene Recovery Efforts.

Abingdon, Va. (Jan. 6, 2025) — United Way of Southwest Virginia (UWSWVA) has raised over $2 million through community-based donations between September 30, 2024, and December 30, 2024, to aid recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Helene. These funds will be distributed directly to 14 localities impacted by the storm, ensuring vital support for individual assistance and recovery initiatives. UWSWVA has committed to not deducting any administrative fees from these contributions.

"Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, these funds will provide critical assistance to those who need it most,” said Megan Parks, Executive Director of United Way of Southwest Virginia. "As recovery continues, we remain steadfast in our commitment to helping these communities rebuild and become stronger. We’re deeply grateful for the donors, volunteers, and partners who made this possible.”

With the funds disbursed at the end of December, local leaders expressed their gratitude and highlighted how the contributions will support recovery efforts in their areas.

Washington County Administrator Jason Berry stated, "This generous funding will allow Washington County to address the immediate needs of our residents while planning for a stronger, more resilient future. We are immensely grateful to United Way and the donors who have supported our recovery."

Smyth County Administrator Shawn Utt added, "Hurricane Helene caused significant damage in our community, and these funds will make a tangible difference for our residents. United Way’s commitment to standing by us through this recovery process is truly invaluable."

In addition to immediate recovery efforts, UWSWVA is committed to fostering long-term resilience in the region. Over the next 24–36 months, the organization will work closely with affected localities to provide ongoing support and evaluate future needs for disaster preparedness and mitigation.

"Our vision extends beyond recovery," Parks explained. "We are working to build a specialized division within United Way to focus on disaster response and prevention, ensuring that our region is better equipped to face future challenges. Together, we can rebuild and safeguard our communities for generations to come."

Beginning in January 2025, United Way established the Southwest Virginia Regional Disaster Rapid Response Fund, a financial resource designed to provide immediate assistance following natural or humanitarian disasters. This fund will ensure swift support for emergency needs such as food, shelter, and medical care, allowing relief organizations to mobilize effectively and deploy resources quickly to impacted communities. United Way encourages ongoing community support to ensure the fund is ready when disasters strike.

As donations continue, UWSWVA anticipates additional distributions in the spring, further strengthening recovery efforts. The organization invites community members to stay engaged and support ongoing initiatives to create a more resilient Southwest Virginia.
