United with our Students and Educators to THRIVE.

Our educators and students have experienced unprecedented challenges over the last few years. Trauma can come in many forms, with a potential cascade of social, emotional and academic difficulties that can interfere with a student's ability to succeed in school. The COVID 19 pandemic highlighted the urgency of providing support and training to alleviate the burden placed on local educators. In response, United Way of Southwest Virginia’s THRIVE team has partnered with our local schools to assist them in building Trauma Informed Schools where a sense of support, community and belonging can be felt among students, faculty and staff.

A THRIVE Partner School is a place where an ongoing, inquiry-based process allows for teamwork, coordination, creativity and sharing of responsibility for all students, and where a thriving, relationship-based school environment is fostered.

Becoming a THRIVE Partner School

Our THRIVE team is dedicated to ensuring that all children succeed in school together with educators, administrators and families. We work with each school individually to create action plans that identify urgent local priorities and tailor solutions specific to the needs of the school district. We THRIVE because of the support of our local public schools partnering with the United Way of Southwest Virginia.

THRIVE Roadmap

Our THRIVE team begins with our SHAPE assessment system to establish a baseline understanding of the school’s current relation to being trauma-informed. These assessments include a range of topics to be discussed including trauma, safety, and staff self-care, aiding the THRIVE Coordinator to develop an action plan specific to each school based on the gathered data and the individual school’s needs. Our collaboration with your School Climate Team may include training, professional development, book studies, and/or tiered supports within the school.
