Multi-generational Support for Our Region
The new Regional Workforce and Child Development Hub is a solution to gaps in the regional economic ecosystem in rural Southwest Virginia. It will make employment in the labor force a feasible choice for families and provide talent development solutions for the emerging and adult workforce.
Located in the heart of Southwest Virginia, a state-of-the-art building will be home to a childcare center, high-tech STEM labs, and a career simulation center.

Support Where it’s Needed Most
Childcare Shortage
The childcare shortage in Southwest Virginia affects more than half of our children. The region’s childcare centers have the maximum estimated capacity to only serve 41% of children.
A new childcare center will serve 300 children, aged birth to five with classrooms and indoor activity and recreation space.
Workforce Gaps
Southwest Virginia has some of the lowest labor force participation rates in the state. In 2019, 31.3% of adults in SWVA did not work.
The center will offer high-tech spaces for industry-recognized certifications and credentials through workforce development programs.
K-12 Career Readiness
Young workers aged 16-29 experience higher rates of unemployment compared to the region’s overall average of 3.7%.
A year-round workforce exploration center will provide K-12 students with hands-on career simulation to spur interest in our region's manufacturing and STEM jobs.
